Pipestone National Monument Aurora on 3/21/2026 at 2:31am
With cloudy skies, I was about to skip aurora chasing until I saw clearing forecasted at Pipestone National Monument in the SW corner of Minnesota. I've never chased the aurora down there, but with no plans for the weekend, I gave it a go.
Three and a half hours later, I arrived on site to clear skies and a nice display of pillars. There was an eerie moment when I looked across the tallgrass prairie and illuminated three pairs of eyes staring back. I'm pretty sure they were deer ... pretty sure.
It's always a gamble when you drive over three hours to see the aurora ... you never know if things will pan out. This trip was worth it, though I spent the next day napping while everyone else enjoyed an early Spring 70 degree day.
