Sugarloaf Cove Corona on 5/11/2024 at 1:10am

After shooting the aurora at Gooseberry Falls, I sought a quieter location at Sugarloaf Cove. Some folks leaving the area said the aurora was settling down, but I headed down to the shoreline anyway.

A geomagnetic storm doesn't just blaze away all night long. It ebbs and flows through several substorms. The key is to wait out the quieter moments and be ready for the next substorm.

It took a few minutes to find a spot on the shoreline, but when I did, a really strong substorm hit. How strong? I usually shoot an aurora facing North, but all my shots at Sugarloaf Cove were facing South. And oh, the corona!

I had tried shooting the aurora corona during the 2023 G4 storm, but my camera focus was off. This time I made sure everything was golden and it paid off.
